Kiss The Fish, Issue #11 - The Kingdom Within
November 06, 2008

I don't want to sound like Horton, because I've never heard a Who. And what I know about the when and wherefore couldn't fill the why of a fool. But the wisest people I've ever heard say there's a kingdom in me and you. And if you want to rule a world, there is one thing you need to do.

Never let the carnival man bark in your ear too long or too loud. He is persistant, persuasive and enticing with dramatic flair. But always remember, the balloons in the big top are full of a lot of hot air.

Seems like you can't go anywhere these days without being assaulted by the advertising of some hype-filled hucksters. Here's an activity for your kids that will get them playing with words while teaching them to look critically at the media.

Write a Jingle

Step 1: Create a Product
Create a name for an imaginary product of your own. How about a new hair creme called "Muss-It-Up" or a soft drink called "UpSoLovelyLicious." Get crazy and creative. Madison Avenue has nothing on you!

Step 2: Create a Word List
Create a long and varied list of words and phrases to go with your product.

Muss-It-Up

MousseSpray SlickCombStyleGel

MessCurl ConditionWashRinseFull-Bodied

BarberShineHandsomeBeautifulFrizzy

Step 3: Write Your Jingle
Begin playing with catchy combinations. For example:

Muss-It-Up
A way of messin up
Without givin up
Your own style.

Don't mousse it up
Just loosen up
With Muss-It-Up.

Get rid of your spray
Get rid of your gel
Tell your hairdresser
To go straight to...

The next time you sit down to watch TV, or take a walk through the mall, ask your young poet to keep an eye out for poetry in the marketplace.

By Invitation Only

I'm looking for parents and teachers to help me fill the Arlington Height's Metropolis Theatre with kids on Sunday, February 22nd for a new poetry show called Radio Poetry.

There is no charge for tickets but you must reserve your seats by filling out the ticket registration form at www.radio-poetry.com

This benefit performance will include a poetic cast of characters and will benefit Ameriface, a charity that helps young people with facial differences. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, call uys at 847-797-0625 or visit the online sponsorship form at www.radio-poetry/AmeriFace.

We hope you can join us for this fun and exciting poetry show.

The Times They are a Changing

One of my earliest poetic influences was Bob Dylan. Through high school, college and throughout my adult life I've turned to Dylan for inspiration. I recently discovered his son Jakob Dylan, and I want to recommend his new CD called Seeing Things.

He looks like his father and writes insightful lyrics, but he's got a sweeter voice and a more soulful guitar. This month's poetic recommendation is Seeing Things.

I hope you enjoyed the monthly update. Encourage your friends to visit our website. This Fall we will featuring poetry podcasts. Keep your eyes and ears open for Radio Poetry.

Until next time...Kiss The Fish,
