“He who is not busy being born is busy dying."
-Bob Dylan

,

What a wonderful notion - that we can start over and start over and start over again. Dylan's line is a perfectly poetic way to begin our new year. Like a child's first encounter with a wild bird, may all my old and wrinkled friends see things new and fresh this year.

Here's a New Year activity that will help keep things fresh for you and your little ones.

Make a list of all the things you're sick and tired of.

  • frozen fingers
  • frostbit toes
  • shoveling snow
  • chapped lips
  • getting hit with a snowball

Then make a list of things you love.

  • hot cholocate & whipped cream
  • making a fort out of blankets & pillows
  • sledding in the snow
  • building a snowman
  • a warm glowing fire

Now shake them up like a blizzard and create something new.

Sled on the snow of
Whipped cream pillows
And shovel the blankets
'Til it's warm.

'Til frostbite toes
And your frozen nose
Are warmed by the fire's glow.

Then sit down
With a chapped-lipped snowman
And slug a mug of hot chocolate.

Happy New Year everyone!

Poetry Drawing Winner

Congratulations to Sam of Everett Elementary School for winning the November poetry drawing. He will receive a free copy of my new book Strange World.
I hope you enjoy Sam's poem.
War

Some people want war,
Some people don't.
It's a tragedy
When people die.

In the moonlit sky,
Guns all around.
Throw them on the ground
And go home to your family.
And very, very soon,
War will be over.

Here's to Sam and may it be a peaceful New Year.

Parents and teachers - try writing poems for your kids and submit them to our Lunchbox Poetry.

You and your children might enjoy composing poems in my new book Strange World. It's full of poems, prompts, inspirational quotes, whimsical drawings and lots of room for children to find their own poetic voices.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year
It's the Fourth of July!
If your goose is good
The holidays fly.

Wrap it up in a present.
Think of the veterans who died.
And soon jolly St. Nick will come.
And before you know it
It's New Years again.
Start the parade.
Let the fireworks begin.

Happy New Year
It's the Fourth of July!
If your goose is good
The holidays fly.

I hope you enjoyed the monthly update. Encourage your friends to visit our website and have a happy New Year!
