Kiss The Fish, Issue #001 -- Welcome
October 05, 2007
“Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping
Than you can understand.”

W.B. Yeats

October, 2007 - Issue #1

Hello,

Thanks for subscribing to the Kiss The Fish newsletter where we celebrate the wit, whimsy and poetry of a child’s voice. Yeats was no mere sentimentalist. His lines remind us how much sorrow there is in the world, but he refused to let go of the magic in a child’s hand.

Each issue of Kiss The Fish is designed to encourage and empower parents and educators. There will be poetry to inspire you, resources to help you bring out the poetry in your children, along with recommendations, updates, and outrageous poetic opinions!

To make things even more poetic, we'll be raffling a free item from our Poetry Shoppe each and every month! So, sit back, relax, and enjoy our premiere issue.

One thing I’ll say from the start is that there is nothing more powerful than an adult with a childlike heart. Every poet agrees the antidote to a troubled and sometimes scary world is in our ability to combine the wisdom of experience with the innocence of youth. Wordsworth said, “The child is the father of the man.” E.E. Cummings said, “A little innocence creates a day.” I say, “Be cool, not cold. Grow young, not old.”

Poem of the Month

Wiggle Waggle
If a wiggle is what you got
Then waggle is what you do.
It's ten times fun as fine art
And tickles like a fiddler's shoe

Just grab a free-flying heart
And faddle like the fiddlers do.
And your wiggle will always have waggle
And your poetry will always be true.

What's New?

Last month was a very special month for A Child's Voice. We published a new poetry book for children titled Strange World - A Poetic Journey. This book was created to excite children about reading and writing. It's filled with poems, prompts, inspirational quotes, artwork and lots of room for young people to find their own poetic voices. For educators, we offer a specially priced classroom set that includes 30 Strange World books, an audio CD, and a teacher guide. You can find more information about both of these products by visiting our Poetry Shoppe.

Poetry Contest Winners

Congratulations to Maya of W.S. Mount Elementary School and Misha of Meadowview Elementary School for winning the September poetry contest. They will both receive a free copy of the book Strange World. Click here to read their winning entries. Parents and teachers - don't forget - our poetry contest is open to adults as well! Bill's Poetic Corner

The most poetic book I’ve picked up recently is called Deep Down Things. It's about the breathtaking beauty of particle physics. Of course, I don’t understand a word of it - but it succeeds in celebrating the poetry of the very small!

The most poetic athlete I’ve ever seen is the man with a metaphor for his name. And I want to challenge Tiger Woods here and now to come see if he can hit a golf ball over the poet tree. I don't believe the man can do it!

A poetic line I encourage you to commit to memory comes from Yeats. It will help to remind you of your true worth.

“I carry the sun in a golden cup
And the moon in a silver bag.”

Believe it!

I'd like to close this first issue of Kiss The Fish with a poem. It's called Packin' A Punch!

Poetry can punch
And never lift a hand.
It will jack you up,
Knock you down
And bury you where you stand.

Poetry packs a punch
The strongest can’t withstand.
It will knock you down,
And jack you up
And never raise its hand.

Forget all you've heard
About power and strength.
A poem's power isn’t measured in lengths.
It’s not measured in width, height or hulk.
It’s almost made of nothing
And somehow full of bulk.

Never underestimate the power of poetry. I hope you enjoyed this newsletter. Until next month - stay poetic!
