Poetry Contest Winners

Here are the winners of the May, 2008 poetry contest drawing:

Colb, Grade 2
Henking School
Name of Poem: Pigs and Noodles

It's raining pigs and noodles,
And maybe even poodles.
Assorted prunes and carrots,
And sometimes even parrots.

It's raining pens and pickles,
And sourness in the air.
And now it's raining nickels,
With money everywhere.

It's also raining dimes,
And are falling through the air.
People are getting richer,
And that's not really fair.

It's raining pigs and pens,
And there's a big fat hen.
They're falling faster and faster,
"I have to build a pen!"

Colb wins a copy of my CD Kiss The Fish. Good work Colb. Keep reading, writing, and playing with words!

Jean, Grade 4
Adult
Name of Poem: Spice of Life

Not grace of nature
Nor foibles of man.
Cool of evening -
Whatever is cooking in that pan
Can serve me on this day.

I am leaving the kitchen
With a sigh of dismay.
It is me that is bland.

When the world has spice
(Which cannot be reached on any shelf)
What will warm and season the soup of this life
When one aims to serve just herself?

I must rest on the notion
That tomorrow be delicious
By spooning for others
It indeed becomes nutritious!

Jean wins a copy of my CD Kiss The Fish. Good work Jean! Now how about all you other parents and teachers out there? Start submitting your poems!

There is a chance you'll meet,
a poem.
Think about it,
Write it down,
Doesn't matter if your in town,
Anyone can write a poem.
All you need to do,
Is think, and write too.
Mix up letters on your tongue,
Letters you recently ate.
Spit 'em out on paper or a plate.
Smell it,
Spell it,
Add it to the plate.
It doesn't matter where you are,
It won't matter near or far.
You with your poem could be a star.
Your poem will be GREAT!!!

Mark, Grade 4
Name of Poem: I Found Meaning

I found meaning
In words unspoken,
And the places
No eye catches.
In the shade of a behemoth movement,
Watching a life
Behind the borders of mind,
Without a breath or word
A reason to question the air above my head.

How I breathe
And am held down,
And crawl through forests
Still as the sky.
Release burden,
And listen to what is always there
Between branches and channels,
And breathe.

Learn from each
To know you.
And the one's you would surrender it all for.
Continue with that emblem
To reaches
Out of corners.

Make the road your own.
Forget each curve
And listen in silence.
We only dreamed to know.

Mark wins a copy of poetry journal Strange World. Good work Mark! Keep writing!

Fat and short
Making a warm fort.
They waddle around
The icy ground!

Maya, Grade 5-6
Fairview Elementary
Name of Poem: New Year

Tilting my head
At the old calendar
And remembering the past months
And years,
And decades,
I feel overjoyed
That I can rip it apart to pieces
And smaller pieces
And even smaller
Because this is a new year.

Walking downstairs to the feast of joy
And staring at the lobster
And remembering the fresh taste
Of tender meat.
Of warm juice.
Of happiness.
I wish you a happy New Year.
And you.
And you.
And may your Year be a buffet of joy.

Maya wins a copy of our CD Kiss The Fish. Good work Maya and happy New Year to you!

Susie Thomas, Teacher
Ben Franklin School
Name of Poem: Poetry in Motion

Poetry in motion Mr. Buczinsky was,
With his timing and a rhyming and the jiggling that he does.
He got our full attention with the dancing bears and apes.
I love to listen to his voice, does he have any recorded tapes?

The tapping and the clapping, and the body movement too,
All made me FEEL the poetry and know just what to do.
Give attention to the rhythm, is it bouncy or a stroll?
A slide, a swoosh or clippity clap, so soft or very bold?

Variety is more interesting, play around and have some fun,
Be inspired, not bored and tired, don't quit before your done!
Just close your eyes and see your dream, what's closest to your heart?
Write descriptive words that show not tell is just one way to start.
Express just how you feel inside so others feel what you have to say,

Next thing you're writing poetry and it brightens up your day!

Susie is the first adult to submit a poem to our contest and that makes me very happy. She wins a copy of our CD Kiss The Fish. I hope you enjoy it Susie!

Brandon, Grade 7-8
Elm Middle School School
Name of Poem: Basketball

Taking the ball up the court
Looking for the open man
But he's too short
I hear the roar of the fans.

Clock running down
There's nothing to do
I feel my sweat trickling down
I call timeout and pretend to tie my shoe.

Once the game resumed I didn't hesitate
10 seconds left
Fake to my teammate
5 seconds left...

I put the ball up
The crowd goes silent...
Beeeeeeeeeeeeppp!!!!!
Swish!!!!!!!!

And very, very soon,
War will be over.

Sam wins a copy of our poetry book Strange World. Congratulations Sam! Keep writing!

Here is the winner of the October, 2007 poetry contest:

Tyler, Grade 7-8
Logan Jr. High
Name of poem: Dreaming

Falling, weightless through the drifting clouds,
Angels, birds, carrying me in their wings.
The sun breaking free from the blue sky, beautifully gleaming,
Just one question to ask myself...
Am I only dreaming?

Wind, rushing against my cheeks,
Droplets of water begin to fall from the sky.
Hitting my back like pins, bullets in action,
Soaring downward,
Falling closer to the ground.
I have to know one thing...
Am I only dreaming?

Gravity taking course, sucking me down like a vacuum,
My winged guardians finally let go, flying back to the heavens.
I feel the rain nipping my neck as I close my eyes for the moment of truth,
I hear my mom call me for breakfast and open my eyes...
I was only dreaming!

Tyler wins a copy of our poetry book Strange World. Congratulations Tyler! We loved your poem!

Maya, Grade 5-6
W.S. Mount Elementary School
Name of Poem: My Uncle's Aunt

My uncle's aunt is hiding out
Beneath my easy chair.
Yes, she's hiding out
Without a doubt
In my secret lair.

My uncle's aunt is hiding out
Beneath my easy chair.
I can hear her pout
And hear her shout.
Make her get out of there!

It's a horrible place to be.
The cushions stained with tea.
If she knows what's best
Let her not be a pest.
Make her get out of there!

Maya wins a copy of our poetry book Strange World. Congratulations Maya! Stay poetic!
