Poetry Lesson Plans
There is a power in the world to change the world, and I call this power poetry. Everyone has it, and you don't need to be a poet. Because poetry is more
than words on a page. It's not just a subject in school. Poetry is a force found whenever we let our imaginations touch real life. We may not all be poets,
but everyone has poetry.
These lesson plans are for everyone who wants to help young people discover and develop their poetic powers. Don't be fooled. Poetry may hold hands naturally with flowers and butterflies, but it has mountain-moving power.
Poetry Packs Punch
Poetry packs a punch
Without ever raising it's hand.
It'll jack you up,
Knock you down,
And bury you where you stand.
Poetry packs a punch
The strongest can't withstand.
Forget all you've heard
About power and strength.
Poetry's power
Isn't measured in length.
It's not height, not heft, not hulk.
It's almost made of nothing,
Yet somehow full of bulk.
Poetry packs a punch
But you'll never get a black eye.
Then again -
I wouldn't turn my head:
Poetry is full of surprise.
The Poetic Classroom
I'm surprised more people are not talking about poetry. The Computer Age sticks its chest out boasting about the power of technology, but one image from a poetic
child will say more than a thousand text messages from the most powerful computer!
If you want students to love learning, teach them poetry. Few things will inspire their imaginations more, and its playfulness appeals to all ages. Make poetry the first
order of every day, and you will unleash a power that energizes your kids, transforms your class, and captivates your entire school.
